Science or Science Fiction?

When new technology looks like it came right out of Science Fiction, does the science influence the fiction or does the fiction influence the science? The answer is … yes! Both are true, according to an article in The Guardian, The real science of science fiction. Authors get ideas from science and dream ahead to what it will become. Scientists read Science Fiction and become inspired with new ideas. Often, the two groups merge and scientists write Science Fiction.

New Release: Tahlia Newland’s Worlds Within Worlds

Prunella Smith: Worlds Within Worlds

By Tahlia Newland

New Release

Author/reviewer bullying – a hot topic for an unusual novel.

Have you heard about reviewers who have endured attacks by disgruntled authors upset with their review, or about authors being hounded by other authors determined to destroy their credibility? Do you wonder how you might handle such a situation yourself?

Anyone interested in these topics and the issues they raise will find much to enjoy in AIA Publishing’s latest release Prunella Smith: Worlds Within Worlds, a metaphysical thriller. The book has an unusual structure in that it weaves together several strands of experience, tangible and intangible, that together create the rich tapestry of the central character’s life.

Description:

‘The barrier between the worlds shatters like the window. The beast is loose. My nightmare has become real. The guy has totally lost it. If he finds us here, we could die. No, I don’t doubt it; we will die.’

Author and editor Prunella Smith inhabits a multilayered reality. Physically, she lives in the Australian bush with her crazy cat Merlin. In her work world, she edits the love story of Kelee, a Magan Lord’s daughter, and in the cyber-world of social media, she’s subjected to slanderous attacks by a disgruntled author. To complicate matters further she sees things through the eyes of a Tibetan Yogi, has strange dreams and relives forgotten memories.

Separate worlds, interconnected and complementary, but can they help when Prunella becomes victim to a real life stalker and her sanity is threatened?

Worlds Within Worlds has a unique perspective on the nature of creativity. Its touch is light, its humour distinctive but it reaches deep into the nature of human experience.

Comments from readers:

“This is riveting stuff, part magical realism dreamscape, part taut psychological thriller, and I was literally on the edge of my seat when the final twist—and what a twist it is—came around. Phew, what a ride! I can honestly say it is the best book I have read this year.” Frank Kusy, author of Rupee Millionaires.

“This book will make you think. Considering the deluge of new works streaming from authors these days, that may be the highest praise a novel can receive.” Amy Spahn, literary critic.

“A fascinating insight into the mind of someone using meditative techniques to deal with stress.” Kevin Berry, Awesome Indies reviews.

A new ebook by Kate Policani

Rites path

Rite’s Path

by Kate Policani

It’s been a while during my hard work on Wilding (which you won’t see right away because I am looking to publish it through traditional channels), but finally I have released a new book! This is a short story with a fun twist – it is a choose-your-own-adventure style book for adults! Yes, you can click through the ebook to reach the next part of the tale. It’s also a 99 cent title and a Kindle Select book, so you may get it for free!

Synopsis:

Mesha and her brothers attend the Grand Festival of Duman to see the greatest spectacle in the land of Sas against their Father’s wishes. Mesha’s people don’t worship Duman and consider his believers to be reprobates. Her sneaky brothers brought her along rather than give up their fun, and she didn’t object.

In the Queen’s Courtyard, everyone expected that the ceremonial dove the queen released would choose a sacrifice. But it should have landed on an object, not a person! The bird lands on Mesha, choosing her as a sacrifice to Duman.

What will Mesha do? Will she die for a god she doesn’t believe in? Can she cling to her beliefs in the face of death and all the decadence of the palace?

New Cover for Ox Herding: A Secular Pilgrimage

I am currently working with Jackie on her book through my Author Services! Here is her fabulous, brand new cover:

eBook CYMK

Biography:

Jackie Griffiths has a BSc in Psychology and Computing and an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies, and has been writing fiction and non-fiction material for twenty years. She founded an online copywriting business providing content for websites, print and digital media, before selling up to concentrate on her novels and short stories. She now lives in abject poverty in the freezing ruins of an old sewage works somewhere in the UK, where she is currently working on her third novel.

Book Description:

Jae has many questions about the meaning of life and the purpose of her existence, but frustratingly, no answers. After the death of her agnostic grandmother, with whom she had her most fruitful philosophical discussions, she embarks on a personal journey to fulfil a mysterious note left to her in the will: ‘Seek and ye shall find.’

The plot follows Jae as one spring day she walks over a bridge into a strange world on the other side of the river. There she encounters challenging situations and unusual people offering tempting theories about the meaning of life. From then on she devotes all her energy to pursuing answers to the philosophical questions that drive her, experiencing a series of extraordinary adventures, until eventually she arrives at a completely unexpected conclusion.

‘Ox-herding’ is a term used to describe the search for meaning, purpose and spirituality that does not result in the finding of God, or of any other external authority. The ox represents the elemental beast within us all: ego. ‘Herding’ our ego is the struggle to recognise, battle with, control, subdue, and finally, transcend the ego. Based on the successive phases of understanding as presented in the Chinese philosophical classic, ‘The Ten Ox Herding Pictures,’ this story has ten chapters through which Jae journeys, discovering the meaning and secret to an enlightened yet thoroughly modern life; a place where all her doubts and questions are dissolved, a place without suffering or fear, yet firmly located in the midst of ordinary life. ‘Ox Herding: A Secular Pilgrimage’ describes how she gets there in a Carrollesque adventure involving remarkable people in extraordinary settings, and sees Jae wrestling a bull, performing in a concert, becoming a guru, engaging in dharma combat, and wandering through the Biblical garden of Eden.

New Review: The Rag Issue 6

The Rag Literary Magazine Issue 6

Seth Porter , Daniel Reilly , Justin Duerr (illustrator)

Genre: Anthology, Short Stories, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction, Poetry, Magazine

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/the-rag-literary-magazine-june-issue-6/

In The Rag Literary Magazine’s 6th issue, many of the characters you’ll meet are living disappointing lives, whether through their own poor decisions or because they were dealt a bad hand, or a combination of the two. When painful and often mundane reality clashes with their hopes and dreams, they struggle to stay afloat.

The Rag publishes short stories and poetry semi-annually from today’s best up-and-coming writers, with a focus on gritty and transgressive work.

Contents:
“Someone in the Room Will” by Falcon Miller
“Where the Butterflies Meet” by Timothy Ghorkin
“many many plumbers” by Daniel Fuginski
“Elevation” by Andrea O’Rourke
“Ayesha Miller” by Royce Brooks
“An Affair” by J.A. Bernstein
“Floaters” by Benjamin Soileau
“Swimming with Sharks” by Don Boles
“Croton Falls Still” by Kara Delavoye
“Kuskanax Creek” Jordan Mounteer
“Pneumatology” by Tyler Petty
“Oddly Precious Melancholy” by Janna Layton
“Dog Days and Wet Dreams” by J.R. Hamilton
“Best Work” by Stacey Bryan
“Lightin’ Hopkins Emerges from the Woods at Mooresville, In” by D.A. Lockhart

About The Rag:

The Rag was founded in September 2011 by Seth Porter and Dan Reilly, who serve as the primary readers and editors. Krissy Marheine designs the magazine and this website. The name The Rag came about both because it speaks to our underlying ethic-we’re independent, and we like our writing on the gritty and grimy side-and because it looks back to the heyday of writing and publishing, when you could read good stories or poetry in just about any old rag, and writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald were able to make a living from writing short stories alone. But the rags that used to publish cutting-edge writing either died off or grew up and turned stale. At The Rag, we hope to be on the front line of a new vanguard of electronic literary magazines with the means and the will to seek out and then support fresh voices.

We think literature is and always will be important to our culture, and a vibrant literary community requires writers who can afford to write. Bylines don’t pay the bills. So, we always pay our writers. This helps draw in the talent, and that’s the ultimate goal, discovering and publishing talented new writers, and creating a magazine worth reading.
