A new ebook by Kate Policani

Rites path

Rite’s Path

by Kate Policani

It’s been a while during my hard work on Wilding (which you won’t see right away because I am looking to publish it through traditional channels), but finally I have released a new book! This is a short story with a fun twist – it is a choose-your-own-adventure style book for adults! Yes, you can click through the ebook to reach the next part of the tale. It’s also a 99 cent title and a Kindle Select book, so you may get it for free!

Synopsis:

Mesha and her brothers attend the Grand Festival of Duman to see the greatest spectacle in the land of Sas against their Father’s wishes. Mesha’s people don’t worship Duman and consider his believers to be reprobates. Her sneaky brothers brought her along rather than give up their fun, and she didn’t object.

In the Queen’s Courtyard, everyone expected that the ceremonial dove the queen released would choose a sacrifice. But it should have landed on an object, not a person! The bird lands on Mesha, choosing her as a sacrifice to Duman.

What will Mesha do? Will she die for a god she doesn’t believe in? Can she cling to her beliefs in the face of death and all the decadence of the palace?

Fantastic tattoos from the web

I don’t have any tattoos. There are several factors why I never went down that road. But they still fascinate me and I think they look fabulous on the people who love them enough to commit to them so totally. The tattoos below exemplify the term “fantastic” both in their amazing artistry and how much they capture the imagination. Not only are they works of art that transform the wearer, but they have become part of them for life.

I found this surreal leg tattoo on Francis Comugnai’s blog

Dump a day blog featured this cybernetic gem.

This skin art featured on The Chive transforms not just the owner of the tattoo, but also the viewer.

Real, fantastic places

Sometimes lovers of fantasy can find inspiration in real places. Here are some amazing, real places that could easily come right out of our favorite fantasy novels:

(Click pictures to see original articles)

  • The Crooked Forest is located right outside of Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, Poland. The grove contains approximately 400 pine trees with bent trunks. They were planted sometime in 1939, but why or who made them crooked is unknown.

  • Skaftafell’s blend of highland plateau, summer meadows and ice-blue glaciers are best explored by hiking, biking or climbing.

  • Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the borders of Vatnajökull National Park.

  • The Jeita Grotto in Lebanon

  • The jungle creeps back into the Temples of Angkor

  • Sedona, Arizona, a town surrounded by amazing natural red rock formations. (I’ve been here and it is way more impressive in person.)

THE MIND-BLOWING FINALE TO THE DIAMOND PEAK FANTASY SERIES IS OUT NOW!

THE MIND-BLOWING FINALE TO THIS AWESOME  FANTASY SERIES IS OUT NOW!
Yes; it is quite literally mind-blowing.

Diamond Peak Series

Don’t miss out on the award-winning Diamond Peak Fantasy Series. Each book in this new adult contemporary fantasy has been awarded an AIA Seal of Excellence in Independent Fiction.  (That means it’s pretty good.) Book one has also been awarded a BRAG medallion for outstanding independent fiction.
Get the full series now and read some real magic.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SERIES.

A beautifully written, exciting fantasy-adventure with vibrant description.” Krisi Keley, author of Mareritt.

“A most exemplary work, a real joy to read. The colour, depth and vitality of both the writing and the narrative is stunningly good: the exploration of motives, outlooks and hopes of the characters quite intoxicating. It ranks as a true work of literary accomplishment.” Clive S Johnson, AIA reviewer.

“In a new twist on fantasy, Tahlia puts characters in fantastical situations, but they are actually fighting everyday situations that have to do with hate, greed, envy, and the like, as Ariel and Nick fight demons that prey off your emotions. Her characters are rich in real life experiences, following on life’s journey of emotional ups and downs. I love the relationship between Nick and Ariel. It’s so pure with the promise of young love and the maturity to put it on hold while they fought the demons they were pitted against. In a race to save Ariel’s mother’s life, Ariel discovers who she is and what she is capable of. This is a gripping series that I would recommend to anyone. It has a great moral compass to encompass the ages.” Cynthia Shepp, editor/reviewer

“I can’t even begin to describe all of the action you’ll find in this highly imaginative journey. This is a fantastic depiction of a fight between good and evil.” Crazy Four Books.

ABOUT THE SERIES.

Lethal InheritanceStalking ShadowsDemon’s Grip and Eternal Destinytake place in the hidden realm of Diamond Peak, a place that interfaces with the ‘real’ world, and is inhabited by demons and the Warriors who hunt them. Diamond Peak exists on a more subtle layer of reality than the one we normally see and can only be seen and entered by those who have refined their perception sufficiently to become attuned to its frequency.

sword_sparklesweb

Inside, rocks move, reeds whisper, people fly and sadistic demons feed on and stir up negative emotions in their human prey. Warriors seek to climb the mountain and defeat the Master Demon who resides at the peak, because his death will free the world of all demons. To attain this goal however, the Warrior must pass through the territories of his bodyguards, the heads of the demon clans, and face their inner demons before they can subdue the outer ones.

The layers of meaning within this series are rich, the symbolism profound and the characters’ experiences, though cloaked in fantasy, are the journey we all take through life whether we know it or not. It is a journey of self discovery on the profoundest of levels. It is the journey to enlightenment.

These are no ordinary books. The magic within them is real. The powers of the characters are within your grasp and their success can be yours.

New Review: Eternal Destiny

Eternal Destiny

by Tahlia Newland

Genre: Paranormal, Metaphysical, Fantasy

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2013/10/13/eternal-destiny-by-tahlia-newland/

Synopsis:

Intrepid traveller Ariel Malony and demon slayer Nick Walker face their deepest fears and their greatest challenge as they search for the Master Demon who holds the key to the future of mankind. Slay him and the world goes free; fail, and it falls irrevocably into violence and chaos.

Guided by a wisdom master of a mystical tradition that uses mind power as the basis of powerful magic, the assault party, including Kestril, the Magan Chiefs’ son, Layla, the flying Noble One, and Twitchet, the talking cat, must travel from the ancient granite walls of the Hermitage, up the kilometre high Steps of Death, and through a labyrinth of shifting gorges to the Palace of Skulls where flesh-eating demons demand to be fed. Even if Nick wins his struggle with the scars of his past and defeats the green-eyed head of the Cogin clan, they still must cross the scree slope, where the bones of Ariel’s father lie, and pass through the territory of vicious elementals to get to the ice caves beneath the summit where the Master Demon awaits.

The journey is extraordinary, the enemies are deadly and the ending is mind-blowing.

This is the final in the Diamond Peak Series: Lethal Inheritance, Stalking Shadows, Demon’s Grip and Eternal Destiny.

I’ve been writing full time since 2008, and I’m also a well-respected reviewer with over 300 published reviews.  All my novels have been awarded a place on the Awesome Indies list of quality independent fiction, and several have received the AIA Seal of Excellence. My young adult magical realism novel ‘You Can’t Shatter Me’ also received a B.R.A.G Medallion for an outstanding independent novel.

My agent, before I went indie, was Debbie Golvan of Golvan Arts, Australia.  I studied writing  with, among others, Australian editor Selena Hanet Hutchins (BCA, Creative Writing), and was mentored by Catherine Hammond,  (BS in Education, MA in Literature/Creative Writing)

Before I began writing full time, I taught high school visual and performing arts and  wrote scripts for theatre in education as well as some unpublished  short stories for children. Full details can be seen on my Linked in profile.

I like and write stuff that’s out of the box.

I’ve studied philosophy & meditation for many years, (which informs the metaphysics in my stories),  and I’m an avid reader, prolific reviewer, extremely casual high school teacher and occasional mask-maker.

Though I trained as a teacher when I left high school, for most of my working life I was a performer . I started as a dancer, then moved into mask, mime and visual theatre. I spent five years doing a niteclub dance/mime act with my husband in Sydney and about 13 years performing in schools in Australia and New Zealand.  I’m a hopeless case of being slave to my creative impulses, but I’m never bored.

indiesbig

In March 2012 I set up the Awesome Indies site to  evaluate and list indie and self published books that meet the same standards as traditionally published books. Happily, all my books met the stringent requirements for addition to the list. Now I’m just part of a team that keeps it running.

I live on a beautiful property in rainforest about two and a half hours drive south of the city of Sydney in Australia. I have a teenage daughter and a husband, who is also a teacher.  We live only 6 km from the main highway but grid power doesn’t reach us, so our electricity is solar and  water generated.

Read an excerpt at the book page.

Synopsis:

I’m a normal girl. I am. I love shoes, fragranced body care, and hair products. I love all the chick flicks that have come out in the theaters in the last 2 years (and a lot of the old ones) and I obsess about my wardrobe.  I respond positively to most of the marketing directed at females in my age group.

My name is Colleen Underhill, and the only abnormal thing about me is that I just discovered I am, or I transformed into, a magician; not the disappearing bunny kind, but the power-shooting-out-of-your-hands kind of magician.

My problem now is that I do NOT believe in magic. Well, I believe in it. I have seen it shoot out of my own hands, but I oppose it in a moral sense; no hexes, no spells, no incantations, no potions, no amulets, no tomes, no casting circles, no eye of newt, none of that. I have to be very clear because people pressure me about it. Whatever they say about “how it’s done,” this is a morality issue for me and I will not cave in to their pressure.

But what do I do now?

Summer Shakeup Title 6: War of Odds by Linell Jeppsen

As part of a summer shake-up, I have decided to snag some of the most interesting-looking reads on my “to-read” list and bump them up! I chose War of Odds by Linell Jeppsen for the sixth book in my Summer Shakeup. The title didn’t grab me as much as the synopsis. It sounds like a read full of twists and excitement.
