About Kate Policani

Hello, my name is Kate and I am a compulsive fiction writer. I have a passion for story. Real or fiction, across genres, I write, read, watch, and listen to stories. Every story holds deeper meaning and lessons to learn. I write to expand ideas and connect readers to my stories and their deeper messages. Through my stories I explore the common themes of life and push the boundaries of my own perceptions. I would love to take my readers on a journey to explore life’s questions and find still more questions to ask. A Seattle mom of three and therefore a coffee addict, I write my books over a hot mocha in the rainy season (Fall-Winter-Spring) and an iced mocha during the six weeks of summer. Every journal I own begins with a few days of my life and then some hastily-scrawled record of whatever story takes over. I think about my stories in bed as I drift off to sleep. I often wake in the middle of the night with a writing idea. I have scrawled story notes on the backs of my grocery lists wadded up in my purse. My writing ideas even have their own email address. Story grows everywhere from the music we hear to the people we encounter. Will you take a journey into story with me?

Author Blog-in Day 3: The Presidents Club by FC Etier

How “The Presidents Club” happened

My first novel, The Tourist Killer, was nearing completion.
The characters had taken me to places not imagined in the beginning.
As the story lines for several of the characters were beginning to converge, one of them, Julian Thibaut, decided to visit a quiet little bar for a drink and some thought.

He met a man who knew of a great place that would fill the bill.
His new friend had on a name tag, but it wasn’t his. The tag read, “Ted.”
The wearer explained, “I borrowed this from another guy I work with. I forgot mine today. My name’s Abe, another President.”
When he said that, a light bulb went off for me.
When the two men arrived at the Louisville Tavern, they met a group of retirees that all had first names in common with previous U.S. Presidents.  In addition to the aforementioned Abraham/Abe, the other members of The Presidents Club: George, Thomas, Woodrow, Franklin, Ulysses, and Ronald. The group included a teacher, general surgeon, minister, retail manager, chiropractor, college professor, and a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, all retired.
The Presidents Club debuted on Sunday, January 6, 2012 as a free weekly serial on the web site of my publisher, Venture Galleries. We were stunned to have received over one thousand readers for the first chapter.
Please accept this invitation to join us on Sunday, January 13, forChapter Two. Venture Galleries will archive every chapter, so if you miss one, it will be easy to catch up. Eventually, The Presidents Club will be available as both an e-book and a trade paperback.

Here’s the pitch:  A group of retirees and the ex-FBI agent hired to protect them face danger as they investigate a murder and uncover the source of ultimate government power.

Genre: a thinking readers’ thriller — enough action to keep the pages turning and enough information to get to know the characters not only by the information given about them, but how and with whom they interact.

The Excitement Vibe

iStock_000000175479Small

Is it just me or does everybody have this problem: When I get to the exciting part of the book, or am almost to the end, my whole family just seems to pick up on that vibe and decide it’s a great time to interrupt me a whole lot. It never fails! I constantly have to abandon my book right before the last page, or right at the greatest parts because that is when they all want something from me. Sometimes the phone even rings! Our new one-year-old pound puppy is especially sensitive to this and my screens are all smeared with slobber because of my exciting reading material.

My actual dog with her face on my laptop.

It also works with things that frustrate me. If I’m getting irked over a form or the bills, they all want to throw the slobbery tennis ball, tell me about something on TV or have a little snack. Sometimes it’s much worse.

If something is boring, I have a day of tranquility in which to handle it, but give me a little excitement and everybody picks up on the vibe. What is with that?

Not my actual baby, but so cute!

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 9,800 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 16 years to get that many views.
