Synopsis:

Her mother executed for witchcraft, her father dead at the hand of a noble, Victoire Charpentier vows to rise above her impoverished peasant roots.

Forced to leave her village of Lucie-sur-Vionne for domestic work in the capital, Victoire suffers gruesome abuse under the ancien régime of 18th century Paris.

Imprisoned in France’s most pitiless madhouse – La Salpêtrière asylum – Victoire becomes desperate and helpless, until she meets fellow prisoner Jeanne de Valois, infamous conwoman of the diamond necklace affair. With the help of the ruthless and charismatic countess who helped hasten Queen Marie Antoinette to the guillotine, Victoire carves out a new life for herself.

Enmeshed in the fever of pre-revolutionary Paris, Victoire must find the strength to join the revolutionary force storming the Bastille. Is she brave enough to help overthrow the diabolical aristocracy?

As Spirit of Lost Angels traces Victoire’s journey, it follows too, the journey of an angel talisman through generations of the Charpentier family. Victoire lives in the hope her angel pendant will one day renew the link with a special person in her life.

Amidst the tumult of the French revolution drama, the women of Spirit of Lost Angels face tragedy and betrayal in a world where their gift can be their curse.

Five stars

I gave Love and Other Subjects five stars and I’m submitting it to Awesome Indies!

For every woman who wonders if she chose the right career…

In Love and Other Subjects Carolyn Jenkins strives for two things—to be the greatest teacher ever and to find true love. She’s as skilled at both as an infant trying to eat with a fork. Carolyn’s suburban upbringing and genuine compassion for people who don’t fit effortlessly into society are no match for weapon-wielding, struggling students, drug-using colleagues, and a wicked principal.

Meanwhile, her budding relationship with a mystery man is thwarted by his gaggle of eccentric sisters. Carolyn depends on her friends to get her through the hard times, but with poverty-stricken children at her feet and a wealthy man at her side, she must define who she is. The reality of life after college can be daunting, the road to full-fledged adulthood long and unscripted. Can Carolyn take control and craft the life she’s always wanted?

About the Author:

I’m married with two children. I’ve been seriously writing for almost a decade although I dabbled much earlier than that! I’ve had short stories published in four Chicken Soup for the Soul books, am a regular contributor to a local magazine, Pittsburgh Parent, and have had essays in local newspapers as well.

I have a PhD in Reading Education and have worked in schools for over twenty years. I work with teachers and their students in grades k-8 and am lucky to learn something new from them every time I walk through their doors. This experience was a huge help in writing LOVE AND OTHER SUBJECTS–a quirky, post-college coming of age story.

My first novel, The Last Letter (2011 IPPY Gold Medal–Regional Fiction, Midwest, 2011 Indie Excellence Finalist Award for Historical Fiction and Regional Fiction, 2011 International Book Awards Finalist for Historical Fiction and Best New Fiction), was a fascinating trip through history, punctuated with fictional characters and events. The idea for the story grew from my great-great grandmother’s letters (see My Dear Frank for the complete set of letters!) written during the year of her engagement to Frank Arthur. The beautiful letters are the inspiration for the novel, the seed from which The Last Letter’s characters and their voices grew.

I’ve also written women’s fiction–LOVE AND OTHER SUBJECTS– and have written another historical fiction novel, AFTER THE FOG, set in 1948 in a town not far from Oakmont, PA. AFTER THE FOG is also an award winning book–silver IPPY and WINNER in the literary category of the National Indie Excellence Awards.

Right now, I’m finishing up a 20,000 word short love story for an anthology and am also using my characters and setting from THE LAST LETTER as per reader request to show what happened between the two timelines in the original book! I hope readers will enjoy the fact I write about varied eras and places and that they will love each book for its unique setting and time.

Synopsis

If last night was real, Ariel should be dead. She’s not, but her mother has disappeared, there are bruises on her neck and the hideous beast in the photo looks frighteningly familiar.

 You can’t send police into a tunnel that doesn’t exist after a villain they can’t see, so when shadow demons kidnap her mother, Ariel has to mount the rescue mission herself.  Hot on the trail, she enters a hidden layer of reality only to find that the demons are hunting her, and they feed on fear. Ariel must defeat them before they kill her and enslave her mother. But how do you kill terrifying demons when your fear makes them stronger?

A quirky old guide teaches her how to locate and unleash her inner power, and while battling hallucinogenic mist, treacherous terrain, murderous earth spirits and self-doubt, she falls in love with Nick, a Warrior whose power is more than either of them can handle.

 Ariel’s journey challenges her perception, tests her awareness and takes her deep into her heart and mind to confront, and ultimately transcend, her fear and anger.

What readers are saying:

An avid reader of YA Fantasy said, ‘I have read a lot of fantasy and I consider this outstanding. It is so exciting and surprising that I didn’t want to put it down. I could never guess what would happen next. It’s a great adventure story bursting with wonder and magic and has an excellent ending.’

One 16 year old reader wrote, ‘Lethal Inheritance was engrossing from the earliest pages with original characters, plots and settings. The pace doesn’t slow throughout the novel, which made me continually want more and hungry for the next book. I loved the Gimps, in fact I loved the whole concept of the book and especially the little challenges throughout, such as the Lures, Reeds and Shifting Stones.’

Another teenage reader wrote, ‘I found ‘Lethal Inheritance’ to be adventurous and engaging. The novel took me on a journey through my imagination and into a world of infinite possibilities, yet still I found I could relate to the character perfectly. A beautifully written and highly imaginative story that deals with a spectrum of emotions, ideas, decisions and determination. A perfect read for all teenagers.’

Author Peter McAra wrote,
‘When I first read Lethal Inheritance, I was hooked. I saw it as a brand new take on vampires and werewolves. Now we have demons – they’re a lot more revolting and unpredictable than mere vampires. The mother/daughter connection in the story is different and interesting too. The more I read, the more involved I got. The style is pretty addictive – new and powerful, but recognisably young-adult-speak – anything but stereotyped. Lethal Inheritance has an intriguing pace of its own. ‘

Laurie Stiller YA author  said…
‘Its a really good yarn . I got quite caught up in it.  It’s inventive and new! The plot is great – always something new and exciting.

Catherine Hammond, the editor and ex publisher.

‘Not only is its imaginary world intriguing but it poses for its teenage protagonist a sinister threat and an overwhelming challenge, as well as a possible new love. One quirky element is the tangible effect of letting fear take over, which poses the question: what feeds on your fear? The mountain demons to conquer, the skills to learn and the barriers to overcome are all intrinsically tied to the inner life. These parallels and other highly original features make this speculative fiction book — the first in a projected series – an absorbing read.’

Not my cup of coffee, but it could be yours!

I saw a great idea on some book reviews recently! The reviewer provided the authors of books they didn’t enjoy with an option to promote without a review, but a “not my cup of tea, but it might be yours” rating. Bonnie Lamer has an entire page just for authors who were brave enough to ask, though she didn’t like their books: http://bonnielamernotmycupofteashelf.blogspot.com/

I’m going to start this policy! If you submit your book to me and the review isn’t what you like, you can ask to have a straight promo instead on my “Not my cup of coffee” page. http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/not-my-cup-of-coffee/

If you have gotten an unsatisfactory review from me in the past that I didn’t post and would like to be on the page, please let me know and I’ll include you.

By Emlyn Chand

Illustrated by Sarah Shaw

Genre: Children

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2012/09/19/poppy-the-proud-by-emlyn-chand/

Evolved Publishing brings you the third of the BIRD BRAIN BOOKS by Emlyn Chand, “Poppy the Proud.” This children’s picture book, with full color illustrations by artist Sarah Shaw, is perfect for kids 4-6 years old.
~~~~~~~~~~
Poppy is the prettiest peacock in the entire garden, but one day his privileged existence is upset when an all-white peacock is born and promptly named the most beautiful by a smitten flock. Intensely jealous, Poppy no longer knows where he fits in and decides to reclaim his title as the fairest bird in all the land, no matter what it takes.
In a desperate attempt to regain the admiration of his peers, Poppy steals items from the humans that visit his park. He wraps himself in a beautiful silk scarf, wears a series of ornate bangles around his neck, and even tries to dye his feathers with colored dust from a festive Holi celebration. Unfortunately, each of these attempts not only fails to improve his appearance, they actually make it worse. What’s a poor bird to do?
In this compelling tale of self-esteem, pride, and learning what makes each of us special, Poppy the peacock discovers that true beauty lies beneath the feathers.
Review of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (by a compulsive reader)
So, I don’t normally do product reviews, but I have to say something about this little beauty. I LOVE it!
I bought it at Best Buy as a replacement for my Toshiba Thrive 10″ tablet that one of my kids cracked. Going in, I was worried that the Galaxy wouldn’t match up to my 10 inch experience. But the 7 inch was cheaper and seemed to be pretty nice. Boy was I pleasantly surprised!
The 7 inch is definitely enough screen size for me. I use it mostly for reading, with some email and gaming. I lost absolutely nothing with the smaller screen. It’s so much lighter and easier to handle than the massive 10 inch! Also, it’s covered with shatterproof plastic instead of glass (so it won’t meet the same fate as its predecessor) and it is HD.
It’s responsive. I see very few crashes. The 8gb internal SD, which is all you can get with this size, isn’t a restriction. I have all the apps I could want on it and some that belong to my hubby, and I haven’t seen any space issues. I put in a 32gb mini SD card, the maximum, and I don’t see myself running out of space any time soon. The 10 inch models can get 16 and 32 gb capacity. I don’t really see why the 7 inch can’t since the cards are all the same size. Meh.
The only thing I’ve found that the Thrive did better was the keyboard input. The Galaxy is just as responsive, but with the smaller screen size the buttons for each character are smaller and cause more mistypes. (Stupid big European-size fingers!)
Super-bonus-important: I can get every ebook reader app out there on my tab. Overdrive, Kobo, Kindle, Wattpad, Nook, Aldiko, and more all works and you can read all your books no matter where you got them. This is a must for a habitual price-shopper like me.
I almost forgot to mention that you can also read manga on a tablet! There’s even an app for you comic book lovers. Something for everyone!
I really loved my Toshiba Thrive, but I love the Galaxy even more! If you’re looking for an e-reader, I’d consider the Galaxy tab.
I wonder what name they’re going to pick for the Android platform next. Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich; what’s next? Diabetes?
Flower Bowl Spell
by Olivia Boler
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal
Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2012/08/20/flower-bowl-spell-by-olivia-boler/
Journalist Memphis Zhang isn’t ashamed of her Wiccan upbringing—in fact, she’s proud to be one of a few Chinese American witches in San Francisco, and maybe the world. Unlike the well-meaning but basically powerless Wiccans in her disbanded coven, Memphis can see fairies, read auras, and cast spells that actually work—even though she concocts them with ingredients like Nutella and antiperspirant. Yet after a friend she tries to protect is brutally killed, Memphis, full of guilt, abandons magick to lead a “normal” life. The appearance, however, of her dead friend’s sexy rock star brother—as well as a fairy in a subway tunnel—suggest that magick is not done with her. Reluctantly, Memphis finds herself dragged back into the world of urban magick, trying to stop a power-hungry witch from using the dangerous Flower Bowl Spell and killing the people Memphis loves—and maybe even Memphis herself.
New Review: Merlin’s Wood by Anne Hamilton
Merlin’s Wood
By Anne Hamilton
Genre: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Young Adult
Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2012/07/25/merlins-wood-by-anne-hamilton/
All his life Reece has ignored the stories told by his grandmother about his namesake, Merlin, the enchanter who belonged to King Arthur’s court. He’s got absolutely no interest in fanciful legends about magicians who live backwards in time. He’s concerned with facts, not fantasy, science not magic. So as soon as talk turns to the ancient title, vast estates and ancestral castle she keeps insisting he’s going to inherit one day, he turns his mind to the experiments he’s conducting in an old hollow oak. It’s Reece’s ambition to grow up to become the first scientist to create a genuine time machine.
Fortunately, Reece’s sister, Holly, has been paying a bit more attention to gran’s wildly fantastic tales. A mysterious explosion catapults the twins across interstellar space, stranding them on another planet. They find themselves in the heart of an alien civilisation where their survival depends on an aloof and enigmatic protector they’re not entirely sure they can rely on. As they start to communicate with Tamizel, they realise how differently their bickering relationship is viewed by the glittering court of Dreamfall. In a world facing two dark perils – one within, one without – hope is reborn. It doesn’t matter that Holly and Reece are armed only with a water pistol, sharp tongues and a curious shape-shifting necklace. The people of Dreamfall come to believe that they are deliverers descended from the stars. Holly begins to appreciate how truly fragile trust is and how easily it can be destroyed. Eventually, both she and Reece learn what it really means to live ‘backwards in time’.
To the despair of my publishers who would like me to develop a consistent readership, I write both fiction and non-fiction. The only common thread in both is their numerical literary style, a fusion of words and mathematics that is as beautiful and old as the first written stories.
Naturally I’m using this unique style right now! It’s irresistible given my passion for words and numbers.”
