About Kate Policani

Hello, my name is Kate and I am a compulsive fiction writer. I have a passion for story. Real or fiction, across genres, I write, read, watch, and listen to stories. Every story holds deeper meaning and lessons to learn. I write to expand ideas and connect readers to my stories and their deeper messages. Through my stories I explore the common themes of life and push the boundaries of my own perceptions. I would love to take my readers on a journey to explore life’s questions and find still more questions to ask. A Seattle mom of three and therefore a coffee addict, I write my books over a hot mocha in the rainy season (Fall-Winter-Spring) and an iced mocha during the six weeks of summer. Every journal I own begins with a few days of my life and then some hastily-scrawled record of whatever story takes over. I think about my stories in bed as I drift off to sleep. I often wake in the middle of the night with a writing idea. I have scrawled story notes on the backs of my grocery lists wadded up in my purse. My writing ideas even have their own email address. Story grows everywhere from the music we hear to the people we encounter. Will you take a journey into story with me?

Summer Shakeup book 3: Thorn by Intisar Khanani

For summer, I’m raiding my own book review list and bumping up some of the most interesting-looking titles! The third book in my Summer Shakeup is:

I love a good fairy tale and this one seemed like a fascinating one!

Synopsis:

Princess Alyrra has never enjoyed the security or power of her rank. Between her family’s cruelty and the court’s contempt, she has spent her life in the shadows. Forced to marry a powerful foreign prince, Alyrra embarks on a journey to meet her betrothed with little hope for a better future.

But powerful men have powerful enemies–and now, so does Alyrra. Betrayed during a magical attack, her identity is switched with another woman’s, giving Alyrra the first choice she’s ever had: to start a new life for herself or fight for a prince she’s never met. But Alyrra soon finds that Prince Kestrin is not at all what she expected. While walking away will cost Kestrin his life, returning to the court may cost Alyrra her own. As Alyrra is coming to realize, sometime the hardest choice means learning to trust herself.

New Review: Silent Symmetry by J.B. Dutton

Silent Symmetry cover lo-res

Silent Symmetry

by J.B. Dutton

Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Romance

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2013/05/22/silent-symmetry-by-j-b-dutton/

Silent Symmetry is my first pick for my Summer Shake-up, the title that interested me most in my List of Upcoming Reviews.

Synopsis:
The Embodied glide through the busy streets of New York, uttering barely a sound.

Their eerie beauty comes from their perfect symmetry. Male, female, old, young… their faces are always absolutely symmetrical. Are they flawless humans, the epitome of evolution? Are they a genetically modified super-race? Are they extra-terrestrials? Once prep school student Kari Marriner becomes aware of their existence, she is driven to find the answer and finds herself ensnared in a web that reaches further than she could possibly have imagined.

Kari’s earliest memory is her father’s death in a car crash back in small-town Wisconsin. Now, 12 years later, her mother has been hired by a pseudo-religious organization in Manhattan called the Temple of Truth (a.k.a. the ToT). At Chelsea Prep, Kari develops a crush on classmate Cruz. But when she realizes that Noon, another attractive guy at school, is involved with the ToT, her curiosity gets the better of her.

Kari stumbles upon a secret tunnel leading from her apartment to another in the building, where an ancient book holds images she can scarcely believe, and a cavernous room contains… something inexplicable. As Kari pieces together the incredible evidence, she discovers that the ToT is run by other-worldly beings called The Embodied who influence human behavior and have established a global long-term human breeding program. But why? And what is her role in all this?

Just as she starts wondering whether the love she feels for Cruz is genuine or if her emotions are being controlled by The Embodied, her mother is kidnapped and Kari has to figure out who is human, who is Embodied, and who she can count on to help rescue her mother.

Silent Symmetry is the exciting first novel in JB Dutton’s EMBODIED trilogy. The second installment, Starley’s Rust, will be published in late 2013.

Summer Shake-up book 2: Strange Academy

As part of my Summer Shake-up, I have decided to snag some of the most interesting-looking reads on my “to-read” list and bump them up! My second bump is

See how fast this goes when I do it this way? I have finished my review of book #1 and am ready to read book #2: Strange Academy by Theresa Wilde. I bumped this book because I love Paranormal Romance and because it looks like a lot of fun and I can really relate to strangeness.

Synopsis:

Determined to uncover the secret behind her eccentric aunt’s mysterious death, Sadie Strange, a quirky substitute teacher with a Master’s degree in comic book superheroes, takes a job at isolated private school Strange Academy. Her biggest obstacle? Haughty hottie Lorde Gray, the chemistry teacher who looks down his Roman nose at her as he tries to get her fired.

Undercover demon hunter Gray vows to use his spell-brewing powers to protect Strange Academy’s true purpose—educating extraordinary children with paranormal gifts. If the world knew the school’s secret, it would start a war that would destroy humanity. Gray won’t let a feisty mortal threaten that, no matter how much she swishes her heart-shaped butt.

When fate throws them together, strange allies Sadie and Gray seek to uncover the hidden forces behind her aunt’s death before they destroy Sadie—and the school. But when the demon hunter forbidden from associating with mortals and the mortal woman who can’t trust her own judgment around alpha males find themselves falling for each other, love is going to get a little strange…

Discover Authors Discovery 2: My Twelve-Year-Old Baby will be Born in Eleven Days!

Fuller’s Curse has been twelve years in the making and there isn’t a strong enough word in the English language to describe my joy at its near arrival. After years of writing, rejections, rewriting, rejections, and more rewriting, finally a publishing contract landed on my desk only to be rescinded two months before the publication date. BUT, through it all my baby survived and it’s finally here. Or soon will be.

Fuller’s Curse is a psychological horror story about a family that is cursed. When you think psychological horror think Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Octavia Butler, Tananarive Due and others of that ilk. This is NOT a vampire, werewolf, slasher (i.e.-Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers), monster book. It is horror with intelligence and emotional impact (not that the other categories of horror don’t have these). In fact, at its core, Fuller’s Curse is a simple tale of good versus evil.
