About Kate Policani

Hello, my name is Kate and I am a compulsive fiction writer. I have a passion for story. Real or fiction, across genres, I write, read, watch, and listen to stories. Every story holds deeper meaning and lessons to learn. I write to expand ideas and connect readers to my stories and their deeper messages. Through my stories I explore the common themes of life and push the boundaries of my own perceptions. I would love to take my readers on a journey to explore life’s questions and find still more questions to ask. A Seattle mom of three and therefore a coffee addict, I write my books over a hot mocha in the rainy season (Fall-Winter-Spring) and an iced mocha during the six weeks of summer. Every journal I own begins with a few days of my life and then some hastily-scrawled record of whatever story takes over. I think about my stories in bed as I drift off to sleep. I often wake in the middle of the night with a writing idea. I have scrawled story notes on the backs of my grocery lists wadded up in my purse. My writing ideas even have their own email address. Story grows everywhere from the music we hear to the people we encounter. Will you take a journey into story with me?

Discovery 3: The Disenchanted Pet

TDP cover new b

The Disenchanted Pet

By Kate Policani

Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopian

Short synopsis: Far into the future, the Earth is ruled by the ShaZha, a hyper-intelligent race of alien beings who are plagued by the violence and volatility of the human race. Supposedly intending to repair the broken societies and polluted planet, they have found the Human problem to be much more complex than they ever imagined. Zarah is a Prodigy, an obedient human, with a caring ShaZha master. Zarah wants to prove all her master’s hopes that humans can be civilized and responsible. When she is lost by her master and exposed to the other side of humanity, she must confront the possibility she might be not a valued citizen, but a pet.

I am currently writing my next book called The Stray, a second book set in the ShaZha Earth. It isn’t a sequel, but the story connects with The Disenchanted Pet

Long Synopsis: The Disenchanted Pet is ashort Science Fiction novel that takes place in the popular “post-apocalyptic Earth” setting,  exploreing the unique problems with the Human Race and how to “fix” it. Zarah is a young, optimistic girl, entering into the exciting world of adulthood with an idealistic perspective. But Zarah lives in the a future where Humanity is ruled by an alien race occupying Earth in order to rehabilitate and repair the planet and its people. Reality intrudes on Zarah’s unspoiled outlook when she is attacked and separated from her SaSa, an alien guardian who is like a parent to her. Trapped within the Feral Facility, pregnant and separated from her home and new husband, she learns all the mistakes about the reality she believed in. She sees that the “Ferals”, who who aren’t serviceable within  the ShaZha’s plans, are not necessarily the monsters her Prodigy society has portrayed them to be. Suffering through the harsh truth about her world and the errors in her ideals, she must face a future without the assurances upon which she always relied. The Disenchanted Pet appeals to Science Fiction lovers as well as readers who have never explored the genre before. It explores the disillusionment of growing up and the harsh realities of adulthood, but with aliens.

Summer Shakeup Title 6: War of Odds by Linell Jeppsen

As part of a summer shake-up, I have decided to snag some of the most interesting-looking reads on my “to-read” list and bump them up! I chose War of Odds by Linell Jeppsen for the sixth book in my Summer Shakeup. The title didn’t grab me as much as the synopsis. It sounds like a read full of twists and excitement.

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Sara Giddings is a lost and lonely girl after the death of her mother, and like many young people forced to deal with life’s tragedies, Sara begins to dabble in drugs and alcohol.

All of that changes when her father takes her to the tiny community of Ashbrook, which overlaps the land of the fae. Here, a young sprite named Pollo discovers that Sara is not a typical teenager, but a witch with immense, untapped power- the power to heal.

Pollo, a cat named Hissaphat, and the wood nymph, Muriel convince Sara that her powers may be the only key to healing what ails the fae, and Timaron, king of the Unseelie court.
Soon, Sara and her two friends, Nate and Chloe, are thrust into a dark and deadly world as they endeavor to free Timaron, whose mind has been possessed by demons and who, in his madness, has declared war on humankind.

With only her two friends and a band of magical misfits, Sara must travel across a dying world. Hunted and haunted by forces even the faeries fear, Sara must reach Unseelie and face the prince of darkness himself, wielding a power she barely understands, to save the faerie king and the fate of two worlds.

Audiobooks in production!

Three of my books are now in production for audiobooks! Audiobooks can be a great way to expand your book’s audience. There are fewer available than there are ebooks and print books, so your little darling can enjoy a smaller playground.

I found my audiobook producers through ACX, Amazon’s audiobook Creation site. Through ACX authors can easily add their titles that are already on Amazon and choose an option to pay for audiobook creation or a profit-sharing arrangement with a narrator.

I found three great narrators and my audiobooks should hit the virtual shelves by September!

New Review Summer Shakeup book 3: Thorn by Intisar Khanani

thorn

Thorn

by Intisar Khanani

Genre: Fantasy, Folk Tale

Thorn is my third choice from my long list of review books for my Summer Shakeup. I’m a big fan of fairy tales and folk tales, so this one was a must-read!

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2013/06/01/thorn-by-intisar-khanani/

Synopsis;

For Princess Alyrra, choice is a luxury she’s never had … until she’s betrayed.

Princess Alyrra has never enjoyed the security or power of her rank. Between her family’s cruelty and the court’s contempt, she has spent her life in the shadows. Forced to marry a powerful foreign prince, Alyrra embarks on a journey to meet her betrothed with little hope for a better future.

But powerful men have powerful enemies—and now, so does Alyrra. Betrayed during a magical attack, her identity is switched with another woman’s, giving Alyrra the first choice she’s ever had: to start a new life for herself or fight for a prince she’s never met. But Alyrra soon finds that Prince Kestrin is not at all what she expected. While walking away will cost Kestrin his life, returning to the court may cost Alyrra her own. As Alyrra is coming to realize, sometimes the hardest choice means learning to trust herself.

Author bio:

Intisar Khanani grew up a nomad and world traveler. Born in Wisconsin, she has lived in five different states as well as in Jeddah on the coast of the Red Sea. She first remembers seeing snow on a wintry street in Zurich, Switzerland, and vaguely recollects having breakfast with the orangutans at the Singapore Zoo when she was five. She currently resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband and two young daughters. Until recently, Intisar wrote grants and developed projects to address community health with the Cincinnati Health Department, which was as close as she could get to saving the world. Now she focuses her time on her two passions: raising her family and writing fantasy. Intisar’s next two projects include a companion trilogy to Thorn, following the heroine introduced in her free short story The Bone Knife, and The Sunbolt Chronicles, a novella serial following a young mage with a propensity to play hero, and her nemesis, a dark mage intent on taking over the Eleven Kingdoms.

New Review: Ping Ping Panda and the Power of Personal Responsibility

Ping Ping Panda and the Power of Personal Responsibility

Ping_Ping_Panda_Cover_for_Kindle

Ping Ping Panda and the Power of Personal Responsibility

by Bernadette Shih & Stephen Smoke

Genre: Children, Folk Tale

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/ping-ping-panda-and-the-power-of-personal-responsibility/

Synopsis: When Ping Ping spends all his money during one afternoon with his friends, the young panda’s father refuses to give him any more.

“When I gave you money for the summer I told you it was your choice how you spent it.”

When Ping Ping’s friends hear about their friend’s money problems, they suggest that if Ping Ping’s father really loved him, he would give him more money.

The rest of the story is about how taking personal responsibility can provide more choices in your life, even if it doesn’t always seem like it at the time.

At its core, Ping Ping Panda is a story of a father’s love…and how it sometimes can be misunderstood.

Children’s author Bernadette Shih and novelist Stephen Smoke have collaborated with well-known illustrator Diane Lucas to create a timely parable that is as fun to read as it is enlightening.

Interview with HMC

HMC

Through the magic of the internet, connecting us instantly across the world, I had the opportunity to interview HMC, author of the upcoming book, White Walls, coming June 20, 2013.

White Walls

HMC is a freelance writer, teacher and artist who resides on the Gold Coast, Australia. She has a degree in psychology, writes a column for an online magazine and blogs about global issues.

HMC is inspired by many genres, but has always been particularly fascinated by magic, thrillers or books with a twist.

What do you like the most about the act of writing? What do you dislike?

I’m a storyteller.

Writing came second, for me. I’m still perfecting the art of getting the story in my head to translate onto pages. Writing is a way to express these stories, much like an artist wants to express an image in their mind’s eye. It doesn’t always work out as you plan it. You can’t give up, though, because often it turns out better!

What I dislike? Hmmm … I dislike waiting for your book to come out. It feels like an eternity.

How does your art influence what and how you write?

My artwork has actually inspired my next novel, entirely. Three drawings I’d done, a few years back, revealed to me three characters for a childrens’ book. It’s called Robert Mumpkin Myer and the Wish Makers and I’m looking to finish it this year.

Not only does my own artwork influence me, but others’, too.  I use art and photography all the time, to help me describe scenes and characters.

What is it about reading and writing thrillers that reaches you and moves you?

The suspense and the twists.

If you can fool me into thinking one thing, and have the reality (in the story) be another, you’ve got my attention. It’s been that way since I was little. I adore surprises.

Does your writing tie in to your work in a school environment? How so?

Not this book, that’s for sure! This one is very adult.

My next novel is for the kids, and my daughter, Charlotte. It’s written purely with the age-group in mind. I know what gets them excited, and what bores them – you can see it on their faces when you’re reading a story. The ingredients for a good childrens’ book are: humour, quirkiness, characters we love to detest, and a hero that they can relate to.

What do you think makes Australian writers are unique? What challenges do you face in a global publishing environment?

We have all have different experiences because we’re all individuals. No matter what country you’re from, you have a unique perspective. I know that we have talent over here and I would like to see us excel in the arts, just as we excel in sports!

In global market, we face many difficulties. I’ve written an entire blog on this one. You can see it HERE

H.M.C

EXCERPT from White Walls:

Sunlight peeked through the gaps in the canopy. The Australian bushland spread over either side of the road, and above them, like a welcoming arch. The quiet shade and cool air made Jade feel secure. Lawyer vines and creepers twirled around the old Gums and Paperbarks. The ground was covered in native grasses and layer upon layer of leaf litter.

It was breathtaking and it reminded Jade of her childhood. She remembered the smell of rain as she ventured through the undergrowth with nowhere in particular to be. There was no set time to be home, as long as it was before the sun went down. She would watch, delighted, as Angus would throw rocks into the creek, catch tadpoles and jump from rock to rock. A much simpler time – just like her mother and grandmother would profess about their very own childhoods. Were we all doomed to become more and more complex?

This was why she returned to Fairholmes. To try to regain some of that happiness that had been here … just where she had left it.  Angus spoke, and he had to repeat himself before getting her attention.

‘I think they’ve given up,’ he said.
