About Kate Policani

Hello, my name is Kate and I am a compulsive fiction writer. I have a passion for story. Real or fiction, across genres, I write, read, watch, and listen to stories. Every story holds deeper meaning and lessons to learn. I write to expand ideas and connect readers to my stories and their deeper messages. Through my stories I explore the common themes of life and push the boundaries of my own perceptions. I would love to take my readers on a journey to explore life’s questions and find still more questions to ask. A Seattle mom of three and therefore a coffee addict, I write my books over a hot mocha in the rainy season (Fall-Winter-Spring) and an iced mocha during the six weeks of summer. Every journal I own begins with a few days of my life and then some hastily-scrawled record of whatever story takes over. I think about my stories in bed as I drift off to sleep. I often wake in the middle of the night with a writing idea. I have scrawled story notes on the backs of my grocery lists wadded up in my purse. My writing ideas even have their own email address. Story grows everywhere from the music we hear to the people we encounter. Will you take a journey into story with me?

As the servant of a demon who eats embarrassment she already feels like she’s the laughing stock of the demonic world. But the scorn of someone who thinks that Hawaiian shirts are the height of cool is the least of her worries.

A powerful fear demon is dead set on making her his slave, a position that carries seriously short life expectancy.

She has no friends.

No powers.

No clue.

Her only hope of escaping a life of terror lies in stealing a grimoire she’s never seen from the clutches of a vindictive group of master demons.

Synopsis:

I’m a normal girl. I am. I love shoes, fragranced body care, and hair products. I love all the chick flicks that have come out in the theaters in the last 2 years (and a lot of the old ones) and I obsess about my wardrobe.  I respond positively to most of the marketing directed at females in my age group.

My name is Colleen Underhill, and the only abnormal thing about me is that I just discovered I am, or I transformed into, a magician; not the disappearing bunny kind, but the power-shooting-out-of-your-hands kind of magician.

My problem now is that I do NOT believe in magic. Well, I believe in it. I have seen it shoot out of my own hands, but I oppose it in a moral sense; no hexes, no spells, no incantations, no potions, no amulets, no tomes, no casting circles, no eye of newt, none of that. I have to be very clear because people pressure me about it. Whatever they say about “how it’s done,” this is a morality issue for me and I will not cave in to their pressure.

But what do I do now?

Bye-Bye Examiner, Hello new direction

Yes, I let my Examiner credentials run out and I am no longer the Seattle Writing Examiner. If you want that position, be my guest.

But why?

Writing for Examiner was a great exercise and a way to expand my platform while showing that I possess the credentials to write web content. Unfortunately it did not bring me money for all the effort I put in. Frankly, I couldn’t think of anything else to write about Writing that hadn’t already been written. (Hehe)

Which brings me to the “new direction”:

I will now be switching gears from the carefree self-publishing-only focus. Now I plan to focus more on writing and getting paid.

I’ve sold a short story called Vampire Thrall to http://www.silkwords.com and have found a great fit there with my writing style. I have great hopes to do business with them into the future. I am scrubbing Horarium till it is nice and shiny to submit to Tor.com for their short-story feature. We’ll see.

Another biggie: I will be seeking a traditional publisher for The Stray, my second story in the ShaZha World. I had planned to finish over the summer but I had to jump on the Silkwords opportunity first. When it is done, off to publishers I go!

As for my site and what I have been doing online for the last two years, you’ll just see less. I still plan to participate in lots of online groups and push Discover Authors forward as far as I can, but I will not spend time scouring the web for self-publishing pots o’ gold. My new “gear” will focus on the changing traditional marketplace and what I find there.

Why am I switching gears like this? I really want to push my writing career into the next level. My family deserves to benefit financially from my writing and not just lose my time and gain nothing. I need to see if I can earn a living off of my writing or learn that it is just a hobby and treat it as such. Self-publishing is wonderful and my preferred method, but I have to try the other path to see if I can succeed that way.

I still plan to self-publish! I write a lot of stories and not all of them will fit the publishing world.

“What if you crash and burn, Kate?” You’re probably not thinking that because you’re too polite. But I am. If I can’t make it pay and contribute to my family finances with my writing so I can help my oldest son become a robot designer, my daughter to become an artist, and my younger son to become Spiderman, then I will write for fun, publish for fun, and give up seeking payment and promotion.

Face it: writing is one of my excretions. (EEEEWWWW!) But it is. I write and it doesn’t stop. Realizing this was the reason I published and I don’t see that stopping now that I can complete a story. Now all I need is a little Vrevzirma to see how it will turn out.

Wish me good fortune!

Read my review here.

Deep Blood is the story of Mississippi sheriff Colt Harper, whose moral compass is slightly askew. He doesn’t care for the mundane parts of his job, he drinks too much, is separated from his wife, and has a former stripper girlfriend who regularly violates the drug laws of the county. Even when the son of a close friend is murdered, he has a hard time concentrating on the subsequent investigation. But when his incorrigible father is arrested again for DUI, he learns a secret of his father’s past — one that threatens his own future.

New Review: The Rag, Vol 5

rag pic 2

The Rag, Vol 5

Genre: Literary Fiction, Magazine, Anthology, Poetry

Read my review here: http://katepolicanisreviews.wordpress.com/2013/07/02/the-rag-vol-5/

About the Magazine:

The Rag was founded in September 2011 by Seth Porter and Dan Reilly, who serve as the primary readers and editors. Krissy Marheine designs the magazine and this website. The name The Rag came about both because it speaks to our underlying ethic-we’re independent, and we like our writing on the gritty and grimy side-and because it looks back to the heyday of writing and publishing, when you could read good stories or poetry in just about any old rag, and writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald were able to make a living from writing short stories alone. But the rags that used to publish cutting-edge writing either died off or grew up and turned stale. At The Rag, we hope to be on the front line of a new vanguard of electronic literary magazines with the means and the will to seek out and then support fresh voices.

We think literature is and always will be important to our culture, and a vibrant literary community requires writers who can afford to write. Bylines don’t pay the bills. So, we always pay our writers. This helps draw in the talent, and that’s the ultimate goal, discovering and publishing talented new writers, and creating a magazine worth reading.

About this volume:

What defines an action as good or evil? What drives a person to act immorally? These are some of the questions underlying the selections in our 5th issue.

Contents:

“Memento Mori” by Stefanie Demas
“No Sleep Since 1903” by Nick Mecikalski (poetry)
“Monolith” by Petros Karagianis (poetry)
“Yes, Officer” by John Woods

“Putting in the Work” by Steve Russo
“Karl’s Last Night” by Laura Andrews

Pollo, a cat named Hissaphat, and the wood nymph, Muriel convince Sara that her powers may be the only key to healing what ails the fae, and Timaron, king of the Unseelie court.
Soon, Sara and her two friends, Nate and Chloe, are thrust into a dark and deadly world as they endeavor to free Timaron, whose mind has been possessed by demons and who, in his madness, has declared war on humankind.

With only her two friends and a band of magical misfits, Sara must travel across a dying world. Hunted and haunted by forces even the faeries fear, Sara must reach Unseelie and face the prince of darkness himself, wielding a power she barely understands, to save the faerie king and the fate of two worlds.

Of choices that can never be unmade. Of actions that can never be undone.

Following the death of his beloved wife, John McCarthy – Grandpa John – calls his family back home. It is time for them to face the memories they have made, both warm and cold. Only then can they move beyond them and into the future.
